Respect is of two types: normative and earned. Normative respect is something you get because of your status, job title, social position etc. Earned respect is one that you get because of your character. It is the earned respect that lasts longer, matters more and ultimately shows how respectable you are. In our journey towards personality development, it is important for us to learn how to gain this second type of respect from others.
"Respect is a way of treating or thinking about something or someone. If you respect your teacher, you admire her and treat her well." TweetWe all want to gain earned respect. But how do we do it? Let me share 7 tips to gain respect.
Give respectThe old adage says it well - give respect and take respect. Some people have the misconception that if you show respect to others, it somehow demeans you in their eyes and you won't get their respect back. Nothing could be farther from the truth. By treating others the way you like to be treated, you are ensuring their respect. Think about this -- whom do you respect more, the one who disrespects you or the one who treats you well?
Respect yourselfIf you have self-esteem issues, it is hard for others to respect you. Always treat yourself with respect. Do not let anybody walk over you. Be your own best friend. Develop confidence and look the world in the eyes. When you treat yourself with respect, you project an image of respectability.

Be AssertiveIt is extremely important to learn to be assertive. Being aggressive or passive is something you should learn to overcome. Assertiveness is a very valuable people skill. When we are assertive of our rights and values, we immediately rise up in others' estimation.
Have valuesAll the well-respected people of the world have strong values. They stand by their principles no matter what happens. We should take a look deep within us and find out our true values. When our conscience tells us something is against our values and principles, we must stand firm and do the right thing.
Control emotionsIt is very hard to respect people who fly off the handle every two minutes. It is important to get a grip on your emotions. I am not saying that you have to turn all robotic - you just have to have a hold over your emotions and not let them control you.
Honor commitmentsA key element of earning respect is to honor your commitments. Always keep your words, be honest and deliver what you promised. This will boost your esteem in the eyes of others. Anybody who cannot be depended upon will find it hard to get others to respect them.
Strive for excellenceAlways be the best you can be. When you deliver your 100%, others will look up to you and respect you. It is important to be sincere to your job and always strive for excellence. Even at home, it is important to try and be the best at the role you play in your family. Set your standards high and exceed them. It will work wonders for your self-respect and get others to respect you.
By learning from these tips and using them to guide you, you can learn to gain respect from everyone you meet. Good luck!
